Diversity Equity Inclusion Statement

Empowering People’s Independence (EPI) values diversity, equity and inclusion for all. We are committed to ensuring that we uphold anti-discrimination policies, procedures, and practices in all that we do. We embrace, appreciate, and respect the differences that our diverse staff bring to our agency. We are better because of these differences.

EPI also embraces the need for continual learning and growth in this area. We wish to listen, learn, and take meaningful actions to advance racial equity and justice for all, both within our agency and in the communities in which we all live and work. Words are no longer enough.

We recognize that our effectiveness will be enhanced, and our mission well served, when the practice of inclusion is reflected across all aspects of our organization and specifically when:

Programming

We create and implement programs using our awareness of cultural differences and treat all clients with respect. We seek input from staff at all levels of the organization and work with a diverse group of stakeholders to ensure that our programs are inclusive.

Policies and Procedures

Our commitment to inclusiveness is evident in our organizational policies and procedures, as part of our strategic plan, and within our organizational goals.

Employment

Our staffing at every level of the organization is reflective of the diverse communities we serve. Associated recruitment and hiring practices reflect a commitment to the value of inclusion. We foster a workplace that respects each person, seeks and values diverse perspectives, and ensures each employee can actively contribute to fulfilling the organization’s mission.

Donors

We share our commitment to inclusion as a core value and practice with current and potential donors and encourage donors to consider and embrace these values.

To assess in earnest our progress towards diversity and inclusion, in 2020, EPI conducted an agency wide diversity assessment that invited feedback from all levels of our organization. We also participated as a challenge partner in the United Way of Rochester’s 21-Day Equity Challenge. In 2021, we developed an action plan based on the results of the diversity assessment, and created new and continual avenues of learning and feedback. EPI is a proud participant in the Rochester-Monroe Anti-Poverty Initiative (RMAPI), a multi-sector collaborative initiative addressing economic inequities in our community.
