Teen Weekend

It’s hard to be a teen with epilepsy – you may have questions about driving, dating, and what your future could be. We host two Teen Epilepsy Weekends each year to help teens answer those questions, meet other teens with epilepsy, and have fun!

Teens stay overnight in a hotel (Saturday night through Sunday) and attend educational sessions hosted by UR Medicine neurologists, covering topics such as staying healthy, the importance of sleep, taking your medications, what questions to ask during a doctor’s visit, driving and epilepsy, dating and epilepsy, and employment.

Saturday night is spent relaxing and having fun! In the past, teens have had a pool party, danced to a DJ, and gone rock climbing. The weekend ends with a Q&A session with experts from the UR Medicine Epilepsy Center for both the teens and their parents.

Supervision is provided by EAWCNY staff and trained epilepsy camp counselors. A neurologist is on site at all times.

Teens must be between 13-17 years old and independent with their medications.

Cost is $35 and includes hotel stay and food. Scholarships are available to cover the costs. Teen Epilepsy Weekend is the brilliant brainchild of Dr. Inna Hughes, a pediatric neurologist from UR Medicine. This program would not be a possible without her support and expertise. Dr. Hughes coordinates the educational presentations and recruits additional medical experts from UR Medicine Epilepsy Center to attend.
